Molecular Level Scanning in Airports - What Next!

Airport security has come a long way in the last few decades, and in the next 24 months, the US Department of Homeland Security is planning to take it even further. Utilizing technology developed by Genia Photonics, the new scanners will work on a molecular level, instantly telling TSA agents absolutely everything about your body, from your current adrenaline levels to the content of your stomach and whether or not you have traces of chemicals on your clothes.

This new scanning technology is believed to be a convenient, incredibly fast means of quickly identifying dangerous substances from up to 50 meters away, including chemicals, explosives, and bioweapons. To date, the US plans to install these scanning devices in every airport as well as at each board crossing. As of now, we’re unsure as to whether or not every person will be scanned, or only a small random group; either way, the machine is fast and discreet enough to do either without you giving it a second thought. Outside of security, this technology is believed to be (at least by its inventors and current owners) indispensable to the medical community, potentially identifying individual cancer cells and other health issues.

The machine itself is small, attaches to a computer, and gathers its information based on feedback from a laser. Although a boon for security and potentially the medical field, issues of privacy are always in question. Given the level of detail and the minute traces that the machine can detect, it could potentially give way to someone unwittingly having something on his or her person, and getting in trouble for it, despite being complete innocent.

It will certainly be interesting to see how this new molecular level scanning device pans out.
