Around every corner, there’s a new diet that consists of eating limited amounts of less than 10 different foods to lose weight quickly, only to put it back on once you begin eating a wide selection again. The Alkaline diet is anything but, and has received the backing of some of the most enviable figures in Hollywood, including Gwyneth Paltrow, Jennifer Aniston, and Kirsten Dunst.

The Alkaline diet works by balancing your body’s chemistry, trying to keep it at an alkaline level of 7.4. This is accomplished by eating a variety of foods that become alkaline when digested, and avoiding foods that turn acidic, which can alter the natural balance of the body.

Once this balance is reached and maintained, weight loss becomes easier, and immunity improves. Dieticians supporting the alkaline diet cite too much acidity in the body as one of the leading causes of cardiovascular disease, depression, and failing memory.

Unlike many fad diets, this one is based on whole, real foods, which is why it’s received the nod of approval from several registered dieticians and medical professionals. Dark, leafy greens are encouraged, as are less acidic fruits like apples and watermelon, as well as a host of nuts. In the end, the ratio should be about 70 to 75 percent of one’s diet consisting of alkaline foods, and then 25 to 30 percent acidic foods, like lean meats and whole grains.

All-natural and easy to follow, the alkaline diet is one to try!
