Recipes Using Quinoa Flour - Tasty Quinoa Treats!

Although often used in a similar way as grains, quinoa is actually a seed that grows in the Andes Mountains. So why are people turning towards this product in lieu of rice, pasta, or even flour? Because it’s incredibly high in protein, fiber, folate, magnesium, iron, zinc, and other B vitamins. And it’s gluten free. Unlike most grains, quinoa is also considered an alkaline food and thus has an alkalizing affect on your body. Overall, that’s so far and beyond regular grains it’s laughable.

Quinoa flour is made of ground quinoa, and is similar in density and texture to whole wheat flour. In most cases, you can switch out half of the regular flour in a recipe with quinoa flour, lowering the gluten content, glycemic index, and upping the nutritional value of the finished product. Why can’t you just replace all of it? Because yeast and other leavening agents need the gluten in flour (all-purpose or whole wheat) in order to function properly.

Looking for an example of making a classic baked treat, like peanut butter cookies, a bit healthier? Here’s one of our favorite recipes using quinoa flour:


  • 1 c. unsalted butter
  • 1 c. all-natural peanut butter
  • 1 c. white sugar
  • 1 c. brown sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 c. quinoa flour
  • 1 1/2 c. standard baking flour
  • 1 tsp. baking powder
  • 1 1/2 tsp. baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp. salt


Mix the sugars with the butter, and then fold in the peanut butter. Incorporate the eggs. Mix everything else in a second bowl. Slowly incorporate the dry ingredients into the sugar / butter / peanut butter blend. Refrigerate the dough for an hour. Make 1-inch balls and place them on a baking sheet. Flatten each one with a fork, and then bake at 375 until the edges just begin to turn golden, about 10 minutes. Let the cookies cool on pan for two minutes before removing. Enjoy!
